Ageing wiring, overloaded fuse boards and a lack of modern RCD protection are common in early 20th-century Chiswick homes. Our electricians work to the BS 7671 (18th Edition) standard and issue the correct certificate for notifiable work.

Emergency Electrician

A power cut, sparking socket or burning smell needs attention right away. Our 24/7 team traces and fixes dangerous faults.

A sparking socket, a burning smell, or a breaker tripping for no obvious reason means you should switch off at the consumer unit (if it's safe) and call us. Our electrician traces the faulty section using a multimeter and, where needed, a thermal camera.

Lighting Installation

We fit every type of lighting, from indoor downlights to outdoor security lights. LED options cut your power bills.

We choose lighting to suit the specific room — warm tones for a living room, bright task lighting for a kitchen, IP44/IP65-rated fittings for bathrooms and outdoor areas. Dimmers are fitted with LED driver compatibility in mind, to avoid flickering.

Switchboard Upgrades

Old fuse boxes are a fire risk. We upgrade to modern switchboards fitted with safety switches (RCDs), built to current standards.

An old fuse board without RCD protection is one of the most common reasons insurers refuse a claim after a fire. Upgrading to a modern consumer unit with RCBOs on every circuit improves safety and usually pays for itself when selling or letting the property.

Power Points & Wiring

Extra sockets, USB outlets and full rewiring — all positioned safely and to suit how you actually use the space.

We plan socket positions around how the room is used, including dedicated circuits for ovens, induction hobs or EV charging, so the main circuit isn't overloaded.

Smoke Alarm Installation

Regulations require interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms in every home. We install certified systems that give maximum warning time.

We install interconnected, photoelectric smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in line with current building regulations. Every unit in the property sounds together, giving more time to get out than standalone alarms.

EV Charger Installation

Home and commercial EV charger installation with dedicated circuits and load management, supporting all the major charger brands.

Before fitting a charging point, we check the capacity of the incoming supply and, where needed, install load management so the charger doesn't overload the home's electrics when other high-draw appliances are running.

Urgent situations

When to call urgently

  • A socket or switch is sparking
  • There's a smell of burning or smoke with no obvious source
  • A breaker keeps tripping as soon as it's switched back on
  • Part of the property has suddenly lost power
  • A socket or cable feels warm to the touch or is buzzing
  • You have received an electric shock or tingling sensation from an appliance

Certification and compliance

Any notifiable work (a switchboard replacement, a full rewire) comes with an Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works Certificate under Part P of the Building Regulations. On request, we also carry out an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report), a mandatory check for rented properties at least every 5 years, or on a change of tenancy.

Our process

How we work

1. Consultation

We take the call and confirm the symptoms (sparking, smell, which breakers are tripping). This helps us decide whether an immediate visit is needed or a scheduled one is safe.

2. Assessment

The electrician locates the fault with a multimeter and, if needed, a thermal camera, pinpointing the actual circuit or appliance.

3. Clear Quote

We explain the fault, the safest remedy and the cost before starting the agreed work.

4. Repair

We repair or replace the faulty component and bring the affected circuit back into safe operation.

5. Testing

We test the circuit under load and verify that the protective devices operate correctly.

6. Certification

We issue the appropriate certificate where required and explain any further recommendations.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about electrical work

What is an EICR and do I need one?

An EICR, or Electrical Installation Condition Report, is a formal inspection that checks your wiring, consumer unit and fixed electrical installations against current safety standards. For rented properties in England, landlords are legally required to have one carried out at least every five years, and a new report is often needed whenever a tenancy changes. It's also commonly requested during a house sale, since it reassures buyers and their mortgage lender that the electrics are safe. The report lists any faults found using standard codes, ranging from minor observations to issues that need urgent attention.

Why did a breaker trip and how will I know why?

A breaker trips for one of a few common reasons: too many appliances drawing power on a single circuit, a short circuit somewhere in the wiring or an appliance, or current leaking to earth, which is what an RCD-type breaker is designed to detect. Flicking it back on repeatedly without knowing the cause isn't advisable, since it can mask a genuine fault or create a fire risk. Our electrician isolates the affected circuit and tests it with a multimeter, and where appropriate a thermal camera, to find the actual cause. Once we know whether it's an overload, a fault at a socket, or a faulty appliance you've plugged in, we can advise on the right fix and any changes needed to prevent it happening again.

How long does replacing a consumer unit take?

A straightforward replacement usually takes half a day to a full working day, depending on the number of circuits in the property and whether any additional protective devices are being added. Power to the property is switched off for part of this time, so it's worth planning around that, particularly if you work from home or have equipment that needs to stay on. Older properties sometimes reveal additional issues once the old board is opened up, such as undersized cabling or missing earthing, which can extend the job slightly. We'll flag this as soon as we see it. At the end of the work you'll receive the appropriate certificate confirming the installation meets current regulations.

Can I stay in the house during a full rewire?

In most cases yes, provided the work is carried out room by room or floor by floor rather than disconnecting the entire property at once. We plan the schedule around which rooms you need access to day-to-day, and try to keep at least one working socket circuit and light source available wherever practical. There will be periods where specific rooms have no power while first fix and second fix wiring is completed, so some temporary inconvenience is unavoidable. For larger properties or where the whole house needs isolating for safety at certain stages, we'll discuss timing with you in advance.

Do you work on commercial premises?

Yes, alongside residential properties we also cover offices, shops and small commercial units in Chiswick and the surrounding area, including routine testing, lighting upgrades and fault-finding. Commercial installations often have additional requirements around emergency lighting, fire alarm interfaces and periodic testing schedules, which we factor into any quote. Where possible, we schedule non-urgent commercial work outside normal trading hours to minimise disruption to your business. For urgent faults affecting a commercial premises, the same emergency response applies as for residential callouts.

Is it dangerous to leave a minor electrical fault until my scheduled visit?

It depends on the fault, which is why it's worth describing exactly what you're seeing or hearing when you call. A single socket that's stopped working with no other symptoms is usually safe to leave for a scheduled visit, but anything involving sparking, a burning smell, unusual heat, or a breaker that won't reset should be treated as urgent. If you're ever unsure, it's better to call and ask. Our dispatcher can help you judge whether it needs an immediate response. Where a fault is genuinely borderline, we'll advise you on safe interim steps, such as which switch to leave off, until an electrician can attend.
